As we are a competitive club, there is a tryout process to obtain membership. If you are an experienced Cheerleader who is looking to continue competitive Cheerleading throughout university and meet likeminded people to make lifelong memories, then the Macquarie University Cheerleading Club is for you! Tryouts are typically held in March of each year and successful applicants are assigned to their respective team and preparations for the first competition of the season begin. If you have missed out on tryouts but would like to be considered for a team, email mqucheerleading@gmail.com

By becoming a member of Macquarie University Cheerleading Club, you are agreeing to our Athlete Code of Conduct found here; Athlete Code of Conduct.

Tryout FAQ

Do I have to be a student to tryout?

Yes. All of our teams are 100% Macquarie University students only.

What can I expect at tryouts?

  1. You will need to complete our online tryouts registration form prior to your desired tryout night. This is available from our as well as on our social media sites, and listed above for you.

  2. When you arrive at the tryout, you will receive your designated number, have your photo taken and we will also take a photo of your student ID (for our club records only).

  3. We will then separate you into groups based on what team you are trying out for/what prior experience you have. You will be taught some stunts and tumbling. You will have some time to practice before we evaluate you in groups – you will never have to perform a skill alone. However, if you are trying out for a higher level we may ask you to demonstrate particular skills both individually and in a group.

  4. Within the next week you will receive an email with your team placement.

Will I have to prepare anything? What if I have never done cheer before?

Our coaches will teach you everything you need to do during the tryout. All athletes, ranging from beginners to experienced athletes are welcome at this tryout. No previous stunt or tumbling sequence preparation is required for this tryout.

What if I want to be a flyer?

If you wish to try out for a position flying on any team, as well as participating in the general tryout you will also need to demonstrate your cheer body positions (flexibility) on the ground. You will also have an opportunity to alternate flying in a stunt group. If you have never flown before or don’t know what the body positions are we will teach you on the day.

How many positions are available in your teams?

We will have 2 teams in 2026, with a maximum of 36 people per team

What if I don’t make a team?

If you don’t make a team we may place you as an alternate for the team. This means that you will be able to attend training as an alternate with your allocated team and may end up competing with the team if a team member is injured or sick, quits, is excessively absent, or is removed from the team by the coaches for any reason.

It is a fairly usual occurrence at the start of the season that people leave the team, or decline to accept their offered position in the first place. Unforeseen circumstances may also arise later on in the season that can cause a team member to leave. As such, you should not be discouraged if you are allocated as an alternate and if you work hard and demonstrate commitment it is fairly likely that you will either be able to compete with the team or be offered a permanent position on the team at some point throughout the year.

Our teams are highly competitive, therefore we make team placement decisions based on the likelihood of success in our competitive division.

No person’s position on a team is 100% guaranteed – this helps to inhibit complacency amongst team members and encourages everyone to work harder.
